The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service will host free workshops on burning wood for heat, electricity and biochar this week in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Palmer, Sitka and Juneau. Workshops will be offered Sept. 21 in Fairbanks, Sept. 22 in Anchorage, Sept. 23 in Palmer and Sept. 24 in Sitka and Juneau.

A free workshop on butchering and handling chickens safely will be offered at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Fairbanks Regional Public Health Center. Fairbanks poultry expert Steve Davila will talk about the butchering, and public health nurse Dennette Marks will discuss safe handling through the butchering process.

Barry Lovegrove, who studies warm-bloodedness in birds and mammals, will present the the 2017 Irving-Scholander Memorial Lecture at 6 p.m. Aug. 31 in the Margaret Murie Building auditorium. Lovegrove is a professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s School of Life Sciences in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. His lecture is titled “Fires of Life: Why We Are Hot.”
